Blue Carbon Hub - Think Tank, Maldives 2026
Leveraging technology solutions to monitor coastal and marine assets
1–3 December 2026 | Malé, Republic of Maldives
The Blue Carbon Hub, in collaboration with the Government of Maldives and the IORA Secretariat, will bring together experts, policymakers and technical practitioners from across the Indian Ocean region for the seventh Blue Carbon Hub IORA Think Tank Symposium.
Taking place in Malé from 1–3 December 2026, the symposium will explore how affordable, scalable technologies can support more effective monitoring and management of coastal and marine ecosystems.
The program will showcase practical solutions including satellite and drone-based Earth observation, artificial intelligence and machine learning, low-cost IoT sensors, and environmental DNA (eDNA).
Through presentations, interactive demonstrations, collaborative working groups and a local field excursion, participants will explore how these technologies can be integrated into existing monitoring frameworks and overcome technical, financial and operational barriers.
The symposium will also identify opportunities for regional collaboration, data sharing and shared technical infrastructure, with the aim of developing practical recommendations and a technology roadmap for IORA Member States. Together, participants will explore how innovation and collaboration can strengthen the monitoring and protection of the Indian Ocean region’s valuable blue carbon ecosystems.
Co-hosted by the Blue Carbon Hub (Australia) and the Ministry of Climate Change, Environment and Energy of the Government of Maldives, in collaboration with the IORA Secretariat.
