Blue Carbon

ecosystems include mangroves, seagrasses, tidal marshes and kelp forests. They are known as ‘blue carbon’ ecosystems because they are marine environments that store disproportionately large amounts of organic carbon.

They enhance food security and livelihoods, especially by supporting fisheries and tourism. They can also play an important role in climate change mitigation and adaptation and can reduce impacts from natural disasters like storms and tsunamis. However, when they are degraded our fisheries decline, we lose natural defence against storms and release stored carbon back into the atmosphere. Rates of degradation globally are high: robust science, evidence-based policy and governance, and sustainable finance are key to protection and restoration efforts.

However, when degraded these benefits diminish or disappear, and they can become significant sources of greenhouse gases. The Blue Carbon Hub

aims to strengthen global knowledge and capacity to protect and restore blue carbon ecosystems, supporting sustainable livelihoods, reducing the impacts of natural disasters, and contributing to climate change mitigation and adaptation.

We do this by:

  • Doing and facilitating cutting-edge research that aims to provide the evidence base and establish best practice for robust policy, finance and action.

  • Providing a knowledge hub to share information about best practice.

  • Investing in people to improve knowledge and skills, empowering individuals and communities to be stewards of their own ecosystems.

  • Developing partnerships with organisations that can assist with implementation of activities that meet these objectives.

Our Vision

To be a global leader in advancing the protection, restoration and sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems through collaboration, innovation and science, creating resilient coastal communities, thriving biodiversity and a sustainable future for generations to come.

Our Mission

The Blue Carbon Hub exists to advance the global protection, restoration and sustainable management of blue carbon ecosystems through collaborative science, innovative finance and evidence-based policy.

By connecting governments, researchers, industry, communities and regional partners, the Blue Carbon Hub works to strengthen knowledge sharing, build capacity and support practical solutions that enhance climate resilience, protect biodiversity and create sustainable livelihood opportunities for coastal communities.
